Volume One: The Stars

The Stars

The Stars is the first volume of New World, a quarterly collection of fiction, creative nonfiction, illustration, photography, and poetry.

Every volume of New World is built around an aesthetic world. For Volume One, that world is the stars.

The stories can take place anywhere and at any time. A modern astronomer at an observatory. Ancient travelers navigating across a desert. A nineteenth-century expedition. Sailors crossing an ocean by celestial navigation. An astronaut beyond Earth. A person alone beneath a night sky.

The stories do not share characters or a fictional universe. They share an idea.

The stars connect astronomy, exploration, navigation, history, mythology, geography, and the human experience of looking into something larger than ourselves.

Deserts. Observatories. Star charts. Telescopes. Sailors. Astronomers. Constellations. Expeditions. Spacecraft. Ancient cosmologies. Dark skies. Distant planets.

Wonder. Isolation. Discovery. Mortality. Faith. Distance. Home. The unknown.

One volume. Many stories. One world.

What Is New World?

New World is built on the idea that an anthology can be more than a collection of unrelated work.

We take fiction, creative nonfiction, illustration, photography, and poetry and organize them around a single aesthetic idea. Stories lead into one another through illustrations, photographs, poems, maps, diagrams, and other visual material. The intention is for the entire volume to feel like one journey through different territories of the same world.

We care about place, discovery, human experience, history, myth, and stories that last.

Some stories are realistic. Some are historical, speculative, fantastic, or strange. What matters is that they have a tangible world and something human at their center.

New World is made for readers who want to be taken somewhere.

The Stars is being made as a physical book worth owning.

250–400 pages.
Heritage hardcover.
Illustrated throughout.
Original fiction and creative nonfiction.

The physical design is part of the storytelling. The cover, typography, paper, illustrations, endpapers, ornaments, and ribbon bookmark are all designed around the world of The Stars.

The book is large enough to give artwork room to impress, small enough to read comfortably, and made to belong permanently on a shelf rather than disappear after it has been read.
